چکیده

In this paper we present a novel approach to solving Constraint Satisfaction Problems whose constraint graphs are highly clustered and the graph of clusters is close to being acyclic. Such graphs are encountered in many real world application domains such as configuration, diagnosis, model-based reasoning and scheduling. We present a class of variable ordering heuristics that exploit the clustered structure of the constraint network to inform search. We show how these heuristics can be used in conjunction with nogood learning to develop efficient solvers that can exploit propagation based on either forward checking or maintaining arc-consistency algorithms. Experimental results show that maintaining arc-consistency alone is not competitive with our approach, even if nogood learning and a well known variable ordering are incorporated. It is only by using our cluster-based heuristics can large problems be solved efficiently. The poor performance of maintaining arc-consistency is somewhat surprising, but quite easy

On the Parallel Complexity of Struc- tural CSP Decomposition Methods

Constraint satisfaction problems are NP-complete in general, but they can be solved in polynomial time and also in parallel if their associated hypergraph is acyclic. It is often important for applications to solve also non-acyclic problems, thus finding larger tractable classes of CSPs is of high interest. Many structural decomposition methods have been suggested, which enable that the efficie...

Interval Propagation on Directed Acyclic Graphs Interval Propagation and Search on Directed Acyclic Graphs for Numerical Constraint Solving

The fundamentals of interval analysis on directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) for global optimization and constraint propagation have recently been proposed by Schichl and Neumaier [2005]. For representing numerical problems, the authors use DAGs whose nodes are subexpressions and whose directed edges are computational flows. Compared to tree-based representations [Benhamou et al. 1999], DAGs offer t...

A New Method for Solving Constraint Satisfaction Problems

Many important problems in Artificial Intelligence can be defined as Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSP). These types of problems are defined by a limited set of variables, each having a limited domain and a number of Constraints on the values of those variables (these problems are also called Consistent Labeling Problems (CLP), in which “Labeling means assigning a value to a variable.) Solu...
